Cyprus - ( in Greek)
Is there a Lesbian Cyprus ? There must be.. but it looks like it's a good bit more closeted than Greece .. Why? As far as we know the church is stronger in Cyprus and affects the state and the local society a lot more. Actually Cyprus seems to be about as homophobic as the average Greek society away from "The capital city" of Athens, which is as big as half of Greece.

Egypt

Men suspected of having sex with men get arrested, imprisoned, charged with the "habitual practice of debauchery," Egypt's penal code provision used to legitimize arrests for homosexual conduct, although homosexuality per se is not refered in the law. They face up to three years' imprisonment if found guilty, usually at speedy mock-trials where they don't have any legitimate rights. Many of them are verbaly abused and tortured in detention. There is a latest 2-year campaign against male homosexuality, including fake internet adds, the raid ... and the latest blockade of a Nile bridge reputed to be a meeting place for men on August 28, 2003 where sixty-two men were reportedlyrounded up by Cairo police.

  • rights & practices :
A conservative Balkan homophobic society, a very conservative mix of the Orthodox Christian and Muslim faiths, where most people look on homosexuality as a disease, shares the general climate of Balkan intolerance towards same-sex relationships.
Jail terms for homosexuality were scrapped in 1996, but society's attitudes have barely inched forward since then.
Gay bars have opened - only to close as soon as the outside world learned about them. "Hooligans used to wait for us outside the bar. A few of our friends were badly beaten,"
The police regularly raid the cruising areas around the capital where homosexuals like to meet up.
"If people found out we could lose our jobs". Most homosexual couples lead double lives

Antirasism law of 2006 forbids discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation and transgender status in all areas and hate speech against sexual orientation. (Just like the Greek radio-TV counsil !)
Same-sex couples are not recognised in any way and the constitution defines marriage 'between man and woman'. Lesbians have no acces to IVF. Blood donation is forbidden to persons having anal contact during the last 6 months.
Lesbian and gay people face a lot of attacks and bullying. The existence of a number of powerfull nationalistic organisations make things worse. The dificulties in the cooperation of the few lgbt activists seems to be the worst factor.
